Support for Stress and Overwhelm in Burton on Trent: Finding Your Way Back to Calm
We all experience stress at different points in our lives. In small amounts, it can actually be helpful, giving us the motivation and focus we need to deal with challenges and get things done.
But what happens when the stress never seems to stop?
Perhaps you’re juggling work, family and a hundred other things, constantly thinking about what needs doing next. Maybe you’re the person everyone turns to, the one who keeps everything going, even when you’re running on empty yourself.
Or perhaps life has simply become too much, and you can’t remember the last time you felt properly relaxed.
When stress becomes a constant part of life, it can leave you feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and unable to switch off. You might find yourself becoming more irritable, struggling to concentrate or wondering why things that once felt manageable now seem so difficult.
Over time, it can feel as though you’re just getting through each day rather than actually enjoying it.
But there’s a reason you might be feeling this way, and understanding what’s happening in your brain is a good place to start.
What causes stress and overwhelm?
Stress and overwhelm can develop for lots of different reasons. Often, it’s not one big thing but the accumulation of lots of smaller things, until eventually it all feels too much.
You might recognise some of these:
- Work pressures, deadlines or feeling that you constantly need to prove yourself.
- Caring for others and putting everyone else’s needs before your own.
- Trying to balance family life, relationships and work, with very little time for yourself.
- Going through a significant life change, even when it’s something you’ve chosen or wanted.
- Feeling responsible for keeping everything and everyone on track.
- Poor sleep and never quite feeling as though you’ve had time to recharge.
- A busy mind that keeps running through everything you need to do, even when you’re supposed to be relaxing.
Our brains are designed to help us deal with challenges. When something feels threatening or demanding, our stress response kicks in to help us cope.
The difficulty comes when we’re dealing with one thing after another, without enough time to recover.
Our brain can start to spend more time in a state of alert, constantly looking for problems to solve and things that might go wrong. Before long, even relatively small challenges can feel much bigger than they normally would.
It’s a bit like having too many tabs open on your computer. Eventually, everything starts to slow down, and even the simplest task can feel like hard work.
Sometimes, it’s not that you can’t cope. It’s that you’ve been coping with too much for too long.
How does stress and overwhelm affect you?
When your brain is busy dealing with stress, it can affect how you think, feel and respond to the world around you.
You might notice physical symptoms such as:
- Tight shoulders, muscle tension or headaches.
- Feeling constantly tired, even when you’ve had some rest.
- Difficulty falling asleep or waking up feeling exhausted.
- Feeling restless, tense or unable to relax.
- Changes in your appetite or digestive discomfort.
You might also notice changes in how you feel emotionally and mentally:
- Feeling as though you can’t cope with one more thing.
- Struggling to concentrate or make decisions.
- Becoming more irritable, impatient or emotional than usual.
- Having a head full of thoughts that never seem to stop.
- Losing motivation or enjoyment in things you normally love.
- Feeling disconnected from yourself or the people around you.
Sometimes, stress can creep up so gradually that we don’t realise just how much we’re carrying until something tips us over the edge.
If you’re finding it difficult to switch off, feeling constantly under pressure or simply longing for a bit of breathing space, it might be time to give yourself some of the attention you’ve been giving everyone else.
You don’t have to wait until you reach breaking point to ask for support.
How can Solution Focused Hypnotherapy help?
I use Solution Focused Hypnotherapy to help you understand what’s happening in your brain when stress starts to take over, and how you can begin to change the way you respond to life’s challenges.
When we’re stressed, our brains can become much more focused on problems, worries and everything that might go wrong. We can get caught up in a cycle of overthinking, making it harder to see solutions or feel on top of things.
Understanding this can be a real turning point. Rather than feeling that something is wrong with you, you can begin to recognise that your brain may simply be struggling to manage everything that’s being asked of it.
In our sessions, we’ll look at what’s happening for you now, what you’d like to feel differently and the small, positive steps that can help you move forwards.
Alongside this, I’ll guide you through relaxation and hypnosis, giving your busy conscious mind an opportunity to slow down and your body a chance to relax.
Over time, our work aims to help you:
- Quiet the mental chatter and spend less time going over everything in your head.
- Feel calmer and more in control, even when life is busy.
- Develop healthier ways of responding to stress, rather than automatically slipping into familiar patterns of worry.
- Build your resilience and confidence, so everyday challenges feel more manageable.
- Make more space for yourself, your relationships and the things that bring you enjoyment.
It’s not about removing every source of stress from your life. That’s rarely realistic! It’s about helping you change your relationship with stress, so that you can deal with life’s demands without feeling completely consumed by them.
And importantly, it’s about looking forwards. We’ll focus on what you want life to look and feel like, and work towards helping you get there.
You deserve to feel good, too
Perhaps you’ve been holding everything together for a long time. Perhaps you’re so used to being busy and looking after everyone else that you’ve forgotten what it feels like to put yourself first.
Whatever has brought you here, you don’t have to keep pushing through and hoping things will eventually get easier.
My approach is warm, supportive and practical. Together, we’ll explore what’s going on for you and find ways to help you feel calmer, clearer and more able to enjoy life again.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before you start. Sometimes, the first step is simply making a little space for yourself.
