IEMT Therapy | Emotional Patterns, Anxiety & Confidence

IEMT Therapy in Burton on Trent

When you understand your feelings, but still can’t seem to change them

Have you ever found yourself reacting to something in a way that feels bigger than the situation deserves? Perhaps you keep getting caught in the same patterns of anxiety, self-doubt or frustration, even though you’ve tried hard to think differently.

Maybe a past experience still affects how you feel about yourself today. Or perhaps you can’t quite explain why certain situations leave you feeling anxious, uncomfortable or not good enough.

Sometimes, understanding why we feel a certain way isn’t enough to change how we feel.

This is where Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT) may be helpful.

IEMT is an approach that uses specific eye movements alongside a structured therapeutic process to explore and work with emotional responses and the way we experience ourselves. It can offer a different way of approaching feelings and patterns that have become difficult to shift.

What is IEMT?

Integral Eye Movement Therapy, usually called IEMT, is a therapeutic approach that explores how emotional experiences and our sense of identity can become linked.

Our brains are constantly processing experiences and using them to make sense of the world around us. Sometimes, the way we have learned to respond to a situation, or the beliefs we’ve developed about ourselves, can continue long after the original circumstances have changed.

For example, you might have experienced criticism in the past and now find yourself worrying about getting things wrong. Perhaps a difficult relationship has affected your confidence, or a particular experience has left you feeling unsafe, even when you’re no longer in that situation.

You may know that you’re capable, that the past is behind you or that you have nothing to fear. But emotionally, it doesn’t always feel that simple.

IEMT works with the way you experience these feelings and patterns, using specific eye movements as part of the therapeutic process.

One aspect of IEMT is exploring the connection between our emotions and our sense of who we are. This can help us look at patterns such as repeatedly feeling rejected, inadequate or responsible for keeping everyone else happy.

The aim is to help you develop a different relationship with these responses, rather than feeling that you’re destined to keep experiencing them.

How can IEMT help?

People seek IEMT for many different reasons. You might have a clear memory of something that still affects you, or you might simply recognise that you keep reacting in familiar ways and want to understand what is happening.

Depending on your individual circumstances, IEMT may be used to support work around:

  • Anxiety and emotional triggers — when certain situations bring up strong feelings that are difficult to manage.
  • Confidence and self-esteem — particularly when you find yourself questioning your abilities or feeling that you’re not good enough.
  • Past experiences — when something that happened earlier in life continues to influence how you feel in the present.
  • Recurring emotional patterns — such as feeling rejected, criticised, overlooked or responsible for other people’s happiness.
  • Workplace stress and imposter feelings — when you struggle to recognise your achievements or feel constantly under pressure to prove yourself.
  • Relationships and boundaries — when familiar emotional responses make it difficult to express your needs or feel comfortable being yourself.

IEMT is not about erasing memories or pretending difficult things never happened. Instead, the work focuses on how those experiences affect you now and whether your emotional response can change.

Everyone’s experience is different, and no particular outcome can be guaranteed. We’ll always consider your needs, your circumstances and whether IEMT is an appropriate approach for you.

Do I have to talk about what happened?

One question people sometimes have about therapy is whether they’ll need to talk through every detail of a difficult experience.

With IEMT, you don’t necessarily need to describe the whole story or go into detail about what happened. We can often work with the feelings, sensations or responses associated with an experience without you having to disclose everything.

This is sometimes described as a content-free approach. It doesn’t mean we never discuss your experiences; it simply means that detailed retelling isn’t always necessary.

For some people, this can make the process feel more comfortable, particularly if they find talking about certain experiences difficult.

We’ll work at a pace that feels appropriate for you, and you remain involved in the process throughout.

What happens during an IEMT session?

We’ll begin by talking about what has brought you to therapy and what you’d like to feel differently. I’ll explain the process and answer any questions, so you know what to expect.

During the IEMT work, I’ll guide you through specific eye movements while we explore the emotional response or pattern you’d like to address. I’ll help you notice what you’re experiencing and guide you through the process step by step.

You don’t need to be good at visualising, and you don’t need to know exactly why you feel the way you do.

IEMT is different from simply being told to think positively. It provides a structured way of working with emotional responses, with the aim of helping you feel less caught up in patterns that no longer serve you.

Afterwards, we’ll take time to reflect on your experience and consider what, if anything, feels different. Depending on what brings you to therapy, I may suggest further sessions or a combination of approaches.

IEMT or hypnotherapy — which is right for me?

Both IEMT and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can support emotional wellbeing, but they work in different ways.

Hypnotherapy often focuses on building a more positive outlook, developing helpful coping strategies, improving relaxation and working towards the future you want.

IEMT focuses more specifically on emotional responses, recurring patterns and aspects of how you experience yourself.

Sometimes one approach is more suitable than the other. In other cases, they can complement each other.

You don’t need to decide this before contacting me. We can talk through what you’re experiencing and explore which approach might best suit your needs.

A different way forward

You don’t have to keep fighting the same feelings or assume that because you’ve felt a certain way for years, it will always be that way.

Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, confidence, a difficult experience or a pattern you can’t quite put your finger on, there may be another way to approach it.

My aim is to offer a calm, supportive space where you can explore what’s happening without judgement and find a way forward that feels right for you.
