Hypnotherapy in Burton on Trent for Low Mood and Depression: Finding Your Way Forward
Depression can feel like carrying a heavy weight that makes even the simplest things seem difficult. You might wake up feeling exhausted before the day has even begun, struggle to find the motivation to do things you once enjoyed or feel as though you’re just going through the motions rather than really living.
Sometimes, it’s hard to explain how you’re feeling. You might feel sad, empty or hopeless, or you may simply feel numb and disconnected from the world around you. Perhaps you’re still managing to get to work, look after your family and keep everything going, but inside, everything feels much harder than it used to.
Depression isn’t simply about having a bad day or feeling a little low. It can affect the way you think, feel, sleep and interact with the people around you. And when you’ve been feeling this way for a while, it can become difficult to imagine things being different.
You might start to withdraw from others, lose confidence in yourself or find that your mind focuses on everything that’s going wrong, rather than anything that might help.
But feeling this way doesn’t mean you’ll always feel this way. With the right support, things can change.
What causes depression?
Depression doesn’t have one single cause. It can develop for lots of different reasons, and often it’s a combination of factors that contribute to how we’re feeling.
Sometimes, there may be an obvious trigger. At other times, low mood can develop gradually, leaving you wondering why you don’t feel like yourself anymore.
Some contributing factors include:
- Ongoing stress and overwhelm. When you’ve been dealing with too much for too long, it can take a real toll on your emotional wellbeing.
- Difficult life experiences. Bereavement, relationship breakdowns, trauma or other significant changes can affect how we feel about ourselves and the world around us.
- Negative thinking patterns. When we’re feeling low, it’s easy to become caught in a cycle of self-criticism, worry and expecting the worst.
- Physical and biological factors. Genetics, physical health conditions, hormonal changes and changes in sleep can all play a part.
- Feeling disconnected or unsupported. Loneliness, isolation or feeling that you have to cope with everything on your own can make things harder.
Sometimes, depression develops without a clear reason at all. You don’t have to identify one particular event or experience to deserve help and support.
How can depression affect you?
Depression looks different for everyone. Some people experience a persistent low mood, while others describe feeling empty, numb or unable to enjoy anything.
You might recognise some of these experiences:
- Feeling sad, hopeless or as though things will never improve.
- Losing interest in activities, hobbies or people you normally enjoy.
- Feeling exhausted or lacking the energy to do everyday tasks.
- Finding it difficult to concentrate, think clearly or make decisions.
- Sleeping too much, struggling to sleep or waking up feeling unrefreshed.
- Becoming more self-critical or feeling that you’re not good enough.
- Withdrawing from friends and family, even when you know you could benefit from their company.
- Finding it difficult to look forward to things or imagine a positive future.
Perhaps you’re frustrated with yourself because you know what you should be doing, but you just can’t seem to find the energy or motivation to do it.
Or maybe you’re so used to putting on a brave face that other people have little idea how much you’re struggling.
If any of this sounds familiar, please be kind to yourself. Depression isn’t a personal failing, and you don’t need to force yourself to feel better or pretend everything is fine.
Reaching out for support can be an important first step.
How can Solution Focused Hypnotherapy help?
I use Solution Focused Hypnotherapy to help people understand how the brain responds to stress, difficult experiences and prolonged periods of feeling overwhelmed.
When we’re feeling low, our brains can become more focused on problems, worries and negative experiences. We may find ourselves going over the same thoughts repeatedly, struggling to recognise the positives or feeling that we don’t have the energy to make changes.
This can become a difficult cycle to break, particularly when we’re already feeling exhausted.
Understanding how these patterns develop can help us begin to approach things differently.
In our sessions, we’ll look at what’s happening for you now and explore what you’d like to feel or experience differently. We’ll work together to identify small, manageable steps that help you move towards a future that feels more positive and achievable.
Alongside our conversations, I’ll guide you through relaxation and hypnosis. This gives you an opportunity to slow things down, ease some of the tension you may be carrying and focus on more helpful thoughts and possibilities.
Our work aims to help you:
- Recognise your existing strengths. When you’re feeling low, it’s easy to lose sight of the things you’re managing and the resources you already have.
- Develop more helpful thinking patterns. Gradually learn to step back from unhelpful thoughts rather than automatically getting caught up in them.
- Manage stress more effectively. Explore ways to cope with everyday pressures and feel less overwhelmed.
- Reconnect with the things that matter to you. Identify small, realistic steps towards activities, relationships and experiences that bring meaning to your life.
- Build confidence in moving forwards. Begin to recognise that change is possible, even when it feels difficult to imagine right now.
There’s no expectation that you need to feel positive all the time or make big changes overnight. We’ll work at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Hypnotherapy isn’t a cure-all, and depression can require different kinds of support. Depending on your circumstances, this might include help from your GP, psychological therapy, medication or a combination of approaches. Hypnotherapy may be considered as part of that wider support.
You don’t have to work everything out on your own
When you’re feeling depressed, even asking for help can feel like a huge step. You might not know where to start, what to say or whether anything will make a difference.
My approach is warm, supportive and without judgement. You don’t need to put on a brave face or have everything figured out before we talk.
Together, we can explore what’s happening for you, recognise the small steps that feel possible and work towards helping you feel more like yourself again.
You don’t have to wait until things get worse before reaching out, and you don’t have to navigate everything alone.
